SOME mourners scrambled to retrieve a coffin, which contained the body of a relative, after a hearse caught fire in Ardbennie, Harare, yesterday.
Witnesses said the mourners were helped by some motorists.
The coffin was later placed at the Church of the Latter Day Saints, which is close to the scene where the hearse caught fire.
The vehicle, which belonged to Vadzidzi vaJeso Funeral Parlour, was reduced to ashes.
It was being driven by Stuart Muyewa, 26, and the incident happened along Bosh Off Drive in Ardbennie.
Sources said the mourners were on their way to a burial ceremony at the deceased’s village.
An eyewitness said:
“We saw the vehicle on fire and mourners, including those in the convoy, stopped and rushed to remove the coffin.
Another witness said the Fire Brigade arrived after the vehicle had already been reduced to ashes.
“Mufi arikuramba kuenda kumusha uyo. Muyendesei kuZororo kana kuMbudzi kusinamitauro mizhinji,” said another eyewitness.
