Teenager hangs self over cellphone

The incident happened on Sunday at about 10:15am.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya identified the girl as Nokulunga Sibanda of Nonkwane Village in Esigodini.
He said the girl’s mother, Mrs Beatrice Sibanda,  feared that the continuous use of a cellphone would distract Nokulunga from her school work.

“On April 6 at about 8pm, Mrs Sibanda withdrew a cellphone from her child Nokulunga alleging that it was disturbing her from concentrating on her studies after which they retired to bed,” said Asst Insp Ngwenya.

He said on the following day at about 10am, Nokulunga’s sister, Ms Leticia Sibanda also advised Nokulunga not to be worried about the cellphone, but instead concentrate on her school work.

Nokulunga is believed to have been angered by the fact that she was denied access to the cellphone and proceeded to commit suicide a few minutes after chatting to her sister.
“It seems this issue of the cellphone did not go down well with Nokulunga who then hanged herself from a tree branch at around 10.15am while her sister was busy cooking in the kitchen,” said Asst Insp Ngwenya.

The matter was reported to the police who attended to the scene.
The body was taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem.
