A FIVE-YEAR-OLD girl from Kudugu village, under Chief Mutema in Chipinge, is lucky to be alive after being brutally attacked by a machete by an unknown assailant.

The incident occurred on May 27 around 2pm.

Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said the incident occurred when the young girl, whose name has been withheld as she is still a minor, was walking home from school.

She was in the company of a six-year-old male friend.

As they navigated a bushy area along the Chipinge-Southdown road, an assailant who had no shirt emerged from the thicket, carrying a satchel.

“The suspect approached the two children, pulled out a machete and attacked the little and defenceless girl multiple times. Her six-year-old male friend ran away, screaming for help. The unknown assailant then stopped attacking the girl and fled into the bushes. The boy rushed to inform her grandmother about the incident,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

The little girl remains in a serious condition at Chipinge District Hospital.

She sustained severe injuries, including five cuts to her right arm, one to her knee, two to her right eye, and two to her left arm.

She also fractured her right arm.

The incident was reported to the police at Junction Gate base, who attended the scene, but no arrests have been made yet.

The police are appealing to members of the public with information regarding the brutal machete attack on a five-year-old girl.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka has also issued a warning to parents and guardians, urging them to ensure their children avoid using footpaths, and to accompany them whenever possible.

“We urge guardians to accompany their children or advise them to avoid using footpaths. We also appeal to anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist the police with their investigations,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
