It happened on Sunday at around
10.15am. Matabeleland South provincial spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya confirmed the incident that occurred in Nonkwane Village in Esigodini under Chief Mabhena.
He said the girl’s mother, Mrs Beatrice Sibanda, feared that the continuous use of a cellphone would distract Nokulunga from focusing on her school work.
“On 6 April at around 8pm, Mrs
Sibanda withdrew a cellphone from her child (name with held), alleging that it was disturbing her from concentrating on her studies after which they retired to bed,” said Asst Insp Ngwenya.
He said the following day at around 10am, the girl’s sister also advised her not to be worried about the cellphone but instead concentrate on her school work.
The girl is believed to have been angered by the fact that she was denied access to the cellphone and proceeded to kill herself a few minutes after talking to her sister.
“It seems this issue of cellphone did not go down well with Nokulunga who then hanged herself from a tree branch at around 10.15am while her sister was busy cooking in the kitchen,” he said.
The matter was reported to the police who attended to the scene. The body was taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem. — The Chronicle.
