A MAN who bashed his girlfriend’s head against a concrete floor on Christmas Day during a row over the custody of their baby has been spared jail.
Prince Silemba, 25, of Lobengula West in Bulawayo, was convicted on his own plea of guilty to physical abuse by Western Commonage magistrate Temba Chimiso on Friday.
During sentencing yesterday, he was sentenced to nine months in prison – which were conditionally suspended.
He was told he must do 210 hours of community service at Njube High School.
Silemba, the court heard, went to 31-year-old Millicent Moyo’s house in Lobengula West intending to see their baby and found his girlfriend standing at the gate. She was holding their one-year-old baby girl, the court heard.
She handed him their daughter and went inside the house to change her shoes. But when she came out, Silemba was gone, prosecutor Ruvimbo Chanduru said.
The court was told that Moyo followed her boyfriend to his house and an altercation ensued over the custody of the baby.
The enraged Silemba punched Moyo several times, pinned her to the ground and banged her head against the tarmac.
Moyo was treated for head injuries and bruising to the arms.
