A “HARMLESS” stare ended in a blood-soaked frenzy when a young man brutally stabbed his peer five times in broad daylight, outside a church.
Thembani Hadebe (22) appeared before Magistrate Sibongile Marondedze facing attempted murder charges after turning a petty glare into a near-fatal knife attack.
According to prosecutor Milton Moyo, on 20 April 2025, around 6 pm, near the main gate of Sengwayo Church in Lobengula Extension, Hadebe allegedly fixed his gaze on Bongani Nyamambo (22), staring him down without blinking.
Feeling unsettled, Nyamambo reportedly snapped, asking: “Why are you looking at me like that?” The question ignited an instant clash.
The courtroom heard that tempers went through the roof and fists flew, with Hadebe delivering a slap to Nyamambo’s head and another to his ear before bolting from the scene.
Nyamambo, furious and wounded, gave chase and caught up with Hadebe.
Hadebe drew an okapi knife and stabbed Nyamambo five times, once on the shoulder, twice in the chest and twice in the abdomen, while trying to break free.
Bystanders rushed in and managed to restrain the attacker.
He was swiftly handed over to officers from Njube police.
Nyamambo was rushed to Mpilo Hospital, where he remains in critical condition, fighting for his life.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many stunned that a simple glance could escalate into such brutal violence.
Magistrate Marondedze postponed the matter to 12 June for continuation of trial.
