CHICAGO — General Motors Co. (GM) was the first to win five-star safety rating for several models of its new trucks from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA) after the latter toughened the new car assessment programme starting from the 2011 model year.
The models included GM’s 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, High Country, GMC Sierra and Sierra Denali 1500 trucks.
The new trucks have many safety upgrades including new backup rear cameras, new airbags and more collision avoidance systems. They will also be equipped with new standard lap belt pretensions in the front-seat safety belts, six standard air bags and 360- degree sensor system.
To be specific, Silverado and Sierra will have fully boxed frames, extensive use of high-strength steel, and several optional safety features, including forward collision alert, lane departure warning, and safety alert seat that are first seen for pickups.
Detroit News on Tuesday quoted GM as saying that the US auto giant is expecting the new trucks to account for much of its profits in North America.
Ford Motor Co.’s F-150, Chrysler’s Dodge Ram 1500 and 2013 Toyota Tundra received four-star rating. — Xinhua.
