GMB clears air on grain sales

The Grain Marketing Board (GMB) has refuted allegations that it is selling maize to millers at subsidised prices who, in turn, sold the same grain to the parastatal at the gazetted producer price.

In a statement yesterday, GMB chief executive Mr Rockie Mutenha said: “Deliveries made to date came from reputable farmers who are in the GMB database. Most of them being farmers that harvested their maize early to plant winter wheat.
“Government subsidised maize to millers to ensure availability of affordable mealie-meal to the public. Subsidised maize is accessed by thoroughly vetted and registered millers.

“The process of registration of millers is done and approved at the head office.”
