THE Department of Immigration is swapping boots for balls this Sunday as it hosts a high-stakes sports tournament in Beitbridge to tackle the twin menaces of human smuggling and drug trafficking.
Dubbed a fight against human smuggling and drug trafficking, the tournament is set to light up Mabidi Stadium, also known as Ronnie’s Arena, with football and netball action from teams representing Government departments and law enforcement agencies from both Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Regional Immigration Officer Mr Joshua Chibunda said all logistics were in place and anticipation was sky-high.
“This is a platform to unite, raise awareness, and support vulnerable migrants,” said Chibunda.

Teams battling it out on the pitch include Busters, Immigration Zimbabwe, ZIMRA, Superstrikers, Rovers, Inspectors, Zimborders, and Immigration South Africa.
Netball won’t be left behind, with fierce competition expected between Rovers, Superstrikers, Trust Me, Immigration Zimbabwe, ZIMRA, Zimborders/Inspectors and ZINARA.

Proceeds from the tournament will go to organisations that help vulnerable migrants along the busy border town.
“We’ve also roped in our South African counterparts to strengthen cooperation in fighting cross-border crime,” added Chibunda.

Besides raising funds, the tournament aims to foster teamwork and community engagement while scoring goals against crime and substance abuse.
Let the games and the fight against trafficking begin!
