The Goat Breeders Association of Zimbabwe (GBAZ) will host its annual Goat Indaba and Training Courses from October 23 to 26 in Bulawayo, with a focus on safeguarding the Matebele and Mashona goat breeds.
Running under the theme “Preserving our Indigenous Goats—Understanding the Matebele & Mashona Breed Standards,” the gathering is expected to draw farmers, breeders, agricultural experts, policymakers and livestock enthusiasts from across the country.
In a statement, the association’s chairperson Mr Sifiso Agbetorwoka said indigenous goat breeds were critical for Zimbabwe’s agricultural sustainability.
“Our indigenous goat breeds, the Matebele and Mashona, are a cornerstone of our agricultural heritage,” he said.
“They are uniquely adapted to our climate, resistant to many common diseases and require minimal inputs, making them ideal for smallholder farmers.”
The four-day event will feature technical and practical training sessions, panel discussions, a showcase of indigenous goats, and a market and auction platform.
Mr Agbetorwoka said a key highlight will be the “Catch Them Young Mentorship” programme aimed at introducing young people to goat farming as a pathway to entrepreneurship and food security.
He said the indaba will also provide networking opportunities for participants to build partnerships and share strategies for sustainable goat production.
The event is open to both GBAZ members and non-members.
