In the bustling city of Johannesburg, South Africa, a Zimbabwean writer Godknows Ngwenya is trying to make a name for himself with his literary prowess.
The 26-year-old self-taught author has penned over 30 unpublished books as part of his journey to becoming a recognised writer.
His writing journey began in 2020 when he dedicated himself to the craft, producing numerous volumes before making his mark this year by publishing his debut novel, ‘Ekuphileni’. The novel explores themes of humanity, urging academically inexperienced individuals to consider non-academic fields as viable paths to making a living.
Inspired by the high unemployment rates in Zimbabwe and the common sentiment that academic inexperience hinders success, Ngwenya felt compelled to address these issues in his writings.
Ngwenya’s journey to becoming an author was initially unexpected, as he admitted it all started as a joke. However, in June of this year, he gained the confidence to publish his first book, marking the beginning of his recognition as an author.
Since then, Ngwenya’s creativity has flourished, with dreams guiding his writing subjects. His recent works focus on the resurgence of Ndebele culture, reflecting his deep connection to his roots. His second novel, ‘Konakele’, was published last month, and he is set to release his third book, ‘Unyawo Oludala’, early next year, aiming to rejuvenate the Ndebele culture.
Growing up in Skuta village in Matabeleland South province, Ngwenya completed his secondary education at a local farm school before relocating to South Africa in 2019. His books are available on his Facebook page, titled ‘Godknows Ngwenya’.
For this talented author, the journey from self-taught writer to recognised novelist is just beginning, and his unique perspective promises to captivate readers interested in the intersection of literature and cultural revitalisation.
