adminto society and this has been realised through the Zimra Charity Ball which is held annually since 2004.
Zimra hosted its first Charity Ball on 16 December 2004 under the theme “Lend a hand and make a difference”. Funds were raised from the function and the proceeds were donated to selected charities across the country.
Zimra has to date donated funds for education to a number of learning institutions from primary to tertiary level. Zimra’s focus in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility is to promote sustainable development in institutions.
This saw the authority resuscitating and implementing projects which would encourage self-sustenance at various institutions. Boreholes were drilled, donations of maize seed were made and poultry projects were revamped and initiated.
On November 25 2011, the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) held its Charity Ball under the theme “Zimra: Going beyond the decade through caring and sharing” at the Rainbow Towers Hotel.
In his keynote address, the Commissioner-General of the Zimra, Mr Gershem Pasi, quoted the famous writer John Bunyan when he said: “It takes a noble person to plant a seed for a tree that will someday give shade to people he may never meet”. Mr Pasi went on to mention that, that kind of spirit is the driving force behind real altruism and selflessness, which are important traits in giving and sharing.
He also chronicled the history of Zimra and said the organisation cannot afford to abandon charitable institutions and let them groom the country’s future leaders on their own without the support of the corporate world.
Funds for charity are also obtained from fines from employees. Staff members are fined for various offences. Zimra employees whose phones ring in meetings, who do not wear the uniform properly or those who forget to put on their name tags are fined. The funds are then deposited into the chairman’s account and channelled towards helping the needy.
The authority wishes to thank all participants both organisations and individuals who partnered with the authority in this year’s Charity Ball for a worthy cause. Their unwavering support is indeed indispensable in the Authority’s mandate to help the needy.
