THERE were no major changes in the World Navi Northern Region Division One soccer league race as most of the leading teams dropped points over the weekend. Gunners are still hanging on at the top despite dropping two points again when they drew 1-1 against Seven Flames at Commando.
The log leaders had to fight for the point, needing a late equaliser, after Seven Flames took the lead in the 33rd minute through Vincent Mhandu.
Gunners got their goal from Everson Seremba in the 79th minute to maintain their one-point lead on the standings as second placed Flame Lilly settled for a goalless draw against Ngezi Platinum at Baobab.
A win by the prison officers against Ngezi could have seen them taking over the lead in the championship race from Gunners but they blew away the chance.
Seven Flames team manager, Zebediah Mhangara, said they were pleased with the point picked although they would have wanted all three points.
“We played very well. Maybe lady lucky was not on our side because we should have collected maximum points.
“The game was almost over and they (Gunners) managed to scrap for a point. The youngsters who remained behind are doing well. The guy who scored was actually our player (Seremba) but he crossed the floor. The gap is not being felt because the youngsters have covered it.
“To us its two points lost but to those who are chasing the championship like Flame Lilly we have done them a favour by drawing with Gunners. We really wanted the three points but we failed,” said Mhangara.
Meanwhile, Mushowani Stars blew away a number of chances in a goalless draw against DC Academy and they are now three points behind Gunners.
For bottom club Royal Classic it was another bad day in the office as they went down 0-1 to Chegutu Pirates with Simba Domingo announcing his return from an unhappy spell at Shabanie Mine with the priceless goal.
Domingo was the star of Pirates in their brave campaign last season and they are many who feel that the attacking midfielder has the talent good enough to be playing in the domestic Premiership.
