FROM a young age, Pellagia Perania Machingauta has always been fascinated with hair.
It all started with Machingauta having a keen interest in different strands of hair. The skills displayed by hair stylists also impressed her.
For as long as she can remember, she often found herself in awe as she closely watched professionals going about their work. She took notes, which later came in handy.
Despite her mother being against the craft, Machingauta was quick to master it, and when an opportunity arose for her to open her own salon, she took it upon herself to be the best.
Today, the hairstylist — affectionately known as Pella — is a celebrity hairstylist, who is always up-to-date with trendy cuts, pixies, cornrows and wigs.
She has literally become an instant hit on social media, where her clients, mostly celebrities and influencers, post their hairdos on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook.
Top personalities like Pokello Nare, Miss V Candy and Madam Boss continuously flock to her salon in Harare.
Pella has thousands of followers on Instagram and TikTok under “Pella The Celebrity Hairstylist”.
However, her decade-long journey has not been rosy.
“I was born in the rural areas and only attained primary school education. I spent the greater part of my youth from 2008 working as a maid, up to 2013. During my time as a maid, I did not picture myself being a hairdresser,” said Pella.
“But I later found another job as a junior in a salon and I worked for a lady named Mrs Tawodzera. I am thankful that she taught me the difference between working under a tree and being a professional hairdresser. I perfected my craft while I was still working for her.”
She would pick up some hair pieces in the salon and practise on her sisters back home until she became a professional.
Word was quick to spread about her exploits.
“Pokello Nare is the one who popularised my brand, though. She was basically my first well-known client and her colleagues asked about her hairstylist and she referred them to me.
“That is how I became an established hairstylist. As my reputation grew, I would sometimes have a backlog of about 30 clients waiting to have their hair done.”
Pella moved to Milton Park in 2021 as demand for her services swelled.
“I know there are many other good salons out there, most of which have their own reputation, but what I always tell people is that we have a certain standard that we have maintained over the years.
“It is this standard and hard work that separates us from the rest. When people come here, they spend a lot of money and we make sure that we dedicate our time and effort to meet their needs.
“All the products we use are original, so I can guarantee you maximum quality in everything we do. We don’t cut corners.”
Pella said her ultimate goal is to become a legendary hairstylist.
