Gokwe in dire need of food aid

Freedom Mupanedemo Midlands Bureau
The majority of people in Gokwe are in dire need of food aid with the continued dry spell in the Midlands Province pointing to a second successive year of drought, the District Administrator, Mr Edwin Mashindi has said. In an interview, Mr Mashindi said the district had sent an SOS to Government for it intervene as a hunger stalks with some villagers now on the brink of starvation.

“There is really need for an urgent Government intervention, providing food relief in most parts of Gokwe. Most villagers are in dire need of food aid following two successive years of drought,” he said. Mr Mashindi said villagers under Chiefs Njelele, Chisina and Nemangwe were the most affected after they failed to harvest anything in the last two years.

He said some of the villagers were stuck with the farming inputs they got under the Presidential Inputs and Command Agriculture schemes after they failed to plant due to the continued dry spell. “Remember Gokwe was hard hit by Cyclone Dineo last year and people did not harvest anything due to floods.”
