Gokwe North villagers are cracking their heads trying to figure out how a body of an infant ended up at an elderly neighbour’s homestead two days after burial.
Chief Chireya and the police confirmed the bizarre incident which occurred in Nembudziya Village a fortnight ago.
Said the chief:
“A partially decomposed body of a five-month- old baby boy, the late son of Nyamhunga family, was buried by the riverbed in line with traditional dictates and customs. What is shocking is that the body was later discovered at an elderly woman’s doorstep two days later”.
Chief Chireya said the circumstances surrounding the child’s death were as suspicious as they were baffling since the child had no record of illness.
The traditional leader said the child just died suddenly two weeks ago.
“The boy’s death is full of mystery since he died while on the mother’s back as she was on her way to the fields.
“The mother said the baby was healthy and alive when she strapped him to her back and was shocked to discover that he died just like that,” said Chief Chireya.
He said they consulted three different prophets from Madzibaba eChishanu apostolic sect and all three proved the elderly woman’s innocence.
“The prophets said the elderly woman where the baby’s body was found was not responsible for the baby’s death or the exhumation of the body.
“They said she was a victim of one bogus prophet who wanted to demonstrate his prophetic prowess,” said Chief Chireya.
He said he reported the case to the police.
Chief Chireya said they were now awaiting the conclusion of police investigations.
The traditional leader said the police asked the villagers to rebury the body.
A police officer in Gokwe North who attended the scene, Chief Inspector Nkosilathi Nyati of Mutora–Nembudziya station confirmed the incident.
He, however, referred the matter to the provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Joel Goko.
“I can confirm that the incident happened and I attended the scene but I am not in a position to shed more light on the matter. Please contact the provincial police spokesperson in Gweru for comment,” said Chief Insp Nyati.
