A 36-year-old Gokwe man has been convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to an effective four years in prison after fatally stabbing his former friend.

In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said Rubeni Ziyambi was initially sentenced to five years in prison by the Gokwe Magistrates’ Court, before one year was suspended on condition of good behaviour, leaving him to serve four years behind bars.

The conviction stems from an incident that occurred on October 20, 2025, at the Jaravaza Business Centre under Chief Nemangwe.

On the day Ziyambi and the victim had an argument, which strained their friendship.

During the altercation, Ziyambi stabbed the victim three times with a knife, inflicting injuries on the back, the forehead and behind the ear.

The victim managed to disarm his attacker, who then fled the scene. A report was promptly made, leading to Ziyambi’s arrest and subsequent prosecution.

The NPAZ has since urged communities to resolve disputes peacefully and seek third-party intervention to prevent violence and protect lives.
