A GOKWE man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for murdering his wife following a domestic dispute at their homestead in Chingarande Village under Chief Chireya.
Wiseman Sai (55) was convicted of murder by the High Court sitting in Gweru after killing his wife, Lucia Mpofu (27), in January this year.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the incident occurred in the early hours of January 29 when Sai and Mpofu were asleep in a single-room hut with their 10-year-old daughter and 12-year-old niece.
“In the early hours of 29 January 2026, the offender and the now deceased were asleep in their single-room together with their 10-year-old daughter and 12-year-old niece, when a misunderstanding arose between the couple.
“The offender strangled the now deceased by the neck before producing a kitchen knife and stabbing her once in the chest,” said the NPAZ in a statement.
The two juveniles witnessed the incident before fleeing the room to alert their grandfather.
“The grandfather proceeded to the scene and found the now deceased lying outside the room in a pool of blood, with the knife still lodged in her chest. The offender had fled from the scene and was later arrested following a police report,” said the NPAZ.
A post-mortem examination established that Mpofu died from cardiac tamponade, heart laceration and a stab wound to the chest.
The NPAZ urged members of the public to seek peaceful and lawful ways of resolving domestic disputes.
“The NPAZ reiterates that domestic disputes should never escalate into violence or loss of life. Members of the public are encouraged to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving conflicts and to report threats or acts of violence to the relevant authorities before they escalate,” said the authority.
