Gokwe Town embarks on roads upgrade

Midlands Reporter
Gokwe Town Council has embarked on a massive road upgrading exercise at its town centre and surrounding suburbs as a way of doing away with dusty roads often associated with the formation of gullies, town secretary Loud Ramakgaphola has said. The town has dusty roads that are sandy and difficult to navigate especially for pedestrians.

Ramakgaphola said the council was targeting roads in and outside the town as a way of improving the outlook of the cotton town.

“Our roads are in a bad condition. The town has sandy soils, hence it becomes very difficult for people to walk and during the rainy season people can’t even come to town be it on foot or by their cars. We’ve witnessed a number of cases where cars got stuck because most of our roads are dust roads, therefore we’ve started this initiative as a way of alleviating some of those problems,” said Ramakgophola.

He said the council had closed the Gokwe-Nemangwe road which passes through Gokwe District Hospital owing to a big gulley that is threatening infrastructure.

Ramakgaphola said they had since hired 30 workers who were working flat-out to repair the gully that has threatened to tear apart the road.

“Plans to tar our roads in all our suburbs and the town centre are now at an advanced stage. We hope to start the project early next year after receiving funds from Zinara.”

Ramakgophola said council needed a front loader truck to help ferry gravel which is found about five to six kilometres from the town.
