GOLD RUSH SHOWDOWN

SCOTTLAND and Hardrock have spent relatively very little time in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Yet this afternoon they meet at Rufaro not as newcomers, but as the clubs shaping the direction of Zimbabwean football.

Scottland owner Pedzai “Scott” Sakupwanya was only 14 when the PSL was launched in 1993.

Today, he is one of the most influential figures in the domestic game and the driving force behind a football project whose reach now extends beyond Zimbabwe’s borders.

Mabviravira are the reigning league champions and next month they will face South African giants Kaizer Chiefs in the annual Toyota Cup in Johannesburg.

Remarkably, Scottland only celebrated their 50th PSL match a fortnight ago.

Hardrock’s rise has been just as rapid.

Backed by Kwekwe-based gold magnate Shepherd Chahwanda, popularly known as Magodora, the debutants have quickly established themselves among the league’s leading contenders.

They played only their 17th Premiership match last week.

Despite their limited top-flight history, Scottland and Hardrock are already spoken about in the same breath as established institutions such as Dynamos, Highlanders and CAPS United.

They are younger than FC Platinum and Ngezi Platinum Stars.

Even Simba Bhora, who only arrived in the Premiership in 2023 before winning the title the following season, have played more league matches than Scottland and Hardrock combined.

What has accelerated their rise is investment.

Both clubs have assembled squads packed with proven performers from Zimbabwe and across the region.

Scottland boast stars such as Knowledge and Walter Musona, Khama Billiat, Abubakar Moffat, Kevin Moyo, former Goalkeeper of the Year Nelson Chadya, Eswatini international Kwake Twala, Namibia’s Moses Shidolo and Ghanaian midfielder Issaka Mohamed.

Hardrock’s ranks include reigning Soccer Star of the Year Washington Navaya, former Soccer Star runner-up Donald Mudadi, Junior Makunike, Munashe Bamara, Tonderai Mateyaunga, Tinotenda Muringai and Eswatini international Neliswa Dhlamini.

These players will provide the backdrop to a fixture carrying significant implications in the title race.

Scottland lead the standings on 34 points, two ahead of Hardrock, who are still awaiting a ruling on their abandoned match against Dynamos on May 24.

The champions arrive in confident mood after a 3-0 win over Triangle United at Rufaro in midweek. Hardrock were held to a goalless draw by FC Platinum in Zvishavane.

The statistics underline how evenly matched the contest could be.

Scottland possess the league’s meanest defence, conceding only six goals in 17 matches and keeping 13 clean sheets.

Hardrock are the division’s leading scorers with 24 goals.

It is the best attack against the best defence.

It is also a tactical battle between two of the league’s most respected coaches, Norman Mapeza and Kelvin Kaindu.

After watching his side lose 3-0 to Scottland in midweek, Triangle United coach Lloyd Chitembwe had little doubt about where the champions’ greatest strength lies.

“Quality is quality and the reason why Scottland is on top of the log is because they have the best players in the league. This is not a secret,” said Chitembwe.

“Scottland are far too much in quality. They are the best team. Without a single grain of doubt, they have the quality.”

Scottland have suffered only one defeat in 17 league matches this season.

But Hardrock defender Tinotenda Muringai believes his side can rise to the occasion.

“I want to encourage Hardrock supporters to come in their numbers,” he said.

The first meeting between the sides ended goalless at Chahwanda Stadium on the opening day of the season. This time there is far more at stake.

For two clubs built on ambition and heavy investment, today’s result could say plenty about who is best placed to carry the championship fight into the second half of the campaign.
