THE annual golf season opener, the Dugmore Trophy, which was set to tee-off at the Bulawayo Golf Club today, has been put on ice due to incessant rains pounding the city.
The rains left fairways at the country’s oldest golf club waterlogged, making it impossible to play on.
“We have had to cancel the Dugmore Trophy due to the rains that have been pounding the country. As you know, the trophy is our annual season opener and was supposed to be held this weekend at its traditional venue,” said Victor Suerga, Matabeleland Golf Society president.
One of the 19 Zimbabwe Golf Association order of merit events, the Dugmore Trophy brings together about 100 amateur golfers from across the country. It is now likely to be held in mid-February.
With the cancellation of the Dugmore Trophy, the season opener will now be the Julius Robinson tourney set for Harare from February 4-5.
Matabeleland nomads will have their own season opener on January 29 at the Bulawayo Golf Club; the same day schools have their inter-schools tournament.
Four events will be used as Windhoek Open qualifiers and the Dugmore Trophy was supposed to be the first, followed by the Julius Robinson, the Mawegu Amatuer in March and the Rowland Park event.
