THE Zimbabwe amateur golf team left the country this morning for the 2018 World Amateur Team Championships set for The Montgomerie and O’Meara courses at Carton House in Maynooth, near Dublin, Ireland.
The team, made up of three top amateurs – David Amm, Stuart Krog and Jack Allard – will represent the country at this year’s edition of the competition.
Amm, the leading local amateur, will spearhead the challenge and will meet up with his colleagues in Ireland after he moved to the United States last week for a four-year golf scholarship.
The 17-year-old, who left the local scene on a high note as the country’s leading order of merit amateur, also won his last tournament, the Zimbabwe Amateur Stroke play.
Having joined the University of Toledo in Ohio, United States, Amm – like everyone else in the team – is making his first appearance at the tournament, formerly known as the Eisenhower Trophy.
“We have a good team that is capable of doing well at the tournament,” said Zimbabwe Golf Association president Mufaro Chiwoniwoni.
“The players were active and have been doing well in the past three months and we look forward to improve from our last outing in which we finished 32nd out of 70.
“The players have a lot of exposure in international competitions.
“I think the players have good mental strength to do well after we managed to provide everything that is required.’’
The tournament was last held at the par-71, 6,771-yard/6,187-meter Mayakoba El Camaleon Golf Club in Mexico.
Zimbabwe had a good outing back in 1992 when the late Lewis Chitengwa won the prestigious tournament, beating Tiger Woods, and last year Kieren Vincent finished tied on fifth place.
