Golfers descend on Midlands for Bata Power tourney

TOP amateur golfers are in the Midlands for the annual Bata Power Amateur Golf Championship which tees off this morning.

The amateurs will compete in the 72-hole tourney from today until Sunday.

A week after taking part in the Chirorodziva Amateur Championships, the golfers will play 18 holes today, 36 holes tomorrow and the final 18 holes on Sunday.

The event at Gweru Golf Club is likely to attract a large field as it has some national and world points.

The points will be useful for the players who want to represent the country in international events where the order of merit points count.

Clive Nguru, who has since turned professional, holds the Gweru Golf Club course record.

Nguru set the record when he won the 2013 edition of the Bata Power tourney with a five-under par 67 in the second round.

Bata Power could give the in-form Robson Chinhoyi a fine platform to continue with his dominance.

Chinhoi won the Zimbabwe Amateur Championship and last week’s Chirorodziva Classic.

With top juniors like Kieran Vincent, David Amm, Bekithemba Ndlove, Justin Kersten unavailable, Chinhoyi could strike again.

Visitor Mapwanya from Renco Mine, who finished third in 2013 behind Nguru and Chinhoyi, will also provide a tough challenge.
