Golf’s new groove: The swing towards fashion, luxury and a youthful edge

This shift is marked by the emergence of luxury golf resorts, trendy apparel brands, and celebrity endorsements, all adding a new level of excitement and appeal.

As the sport evolves, it is becoming more accessible to a wider, more diverse audience; so, how is this helping to boost business opportunities?

Reimagining golf: A pandemic-driven renaissance

The global pandemic unexpectedly became a turning point for golf.

As indoor activities and social events were limited, individuals sought refuge in golf as a secure outdoor activity that provided physical and mental wellness.

The inherent features of the sport, being in nature, strolling through green fairways and enjoying casual competition with friends, were newly valued.

This time of contemplation and reassessment made many people recognise the therapeutic and social benefits of golf which led to a revival in its popularity.

A surge in popularity

Recent statistics show a significant uptick in golf’s popularity, especially among younger demographics.

According to the National Golf Foundation, there has been a noticeable increase in participation rates, with a record number of people playing on a golf course for the first time in 2023.

The sport’s highest level of participation is currently among young adults, aged 18-34 and 37 percent of ‘juniors’ are girls compared to just 15 percent in 2000.

This surge is partly attributed to the pandemic, as people sought outdoor activities that allowed for social distancing. Yet the trend has continued beyond the pandemic and indicates a sustained interest in the sport.

Breaking stereotypes: Golf’s inclusive future

Perhaps the most significant change in golf is its efforts to shed its elitist, exclusive reputation.

Initiatives to make golf more inclusive and diverse are gaining traction, with programs aimed at introducing the sport to under-represented groups.

The rise of social golf clubs and groups, such as Women’s Golf Day (June 4, 2024) and the United Black Golfers Association (established in 2014) are all helping to break down barriers and create a more welcoming environment for all.

A swing towards diversity and inclusion

One of the most significant shifts in golf’s landscape is the increasing diversity among its players.

Women, in particular, are making their mark on the fairways.

The growing presence of women in golf is also reflected in the rise of female-owned and -designed golf apparel brands.

Companies like Foray Golf, Addison Bay, Ame & Lulu and SheWarrior are revolutionising women’s golf fashion, offering stylish and functional attire that caters to the modern female golfer.

Eastside Golf is a breakthrough golf apparel brand founded by Olajuwon Ajanaku and Earl Cooper in 2019.

Created to offer more attractive apparel to the younger generation, the brands founders pledge to apply the morals and values golf has to offer in order to help players better themselves and change their lives.

A brands not only breaking the mold with their designs but also empowering golfers to feel confident and comfortable on the course.

Breaking down barriers

Golf’s efforts to increase diversity extend beyond gender. The sport is actively working to become more inclusive of players from different ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Organisations such as The First Tee are dedicated to making golf accessible to under-served communities, with opportunities for young people to learn the game and its values.

England Golf launched the Respect in Golf campaign last year to change the dynamic of the sport on a National level, and build more opportunities for all.

Jeremy Tomlinson, chief executive officer at England Golf, said: “We recognise the negative perceptions of golf regarding age, gender, ethnicity and ability, which we intend to break down. There are too many good people in our sport looking to drive a more inclusive, welcoming culture for us not to drive communicated change through this movement.

“Our England Golf Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Framework, alongside the Junior Golf Strategy in collaboration with the Golf Foundation, has been created to not only increase participation throughout under-represented groups but to also address and change perceptions.

“We see Respect in Golf running through the heart of everything we do on a daily basis.

The industry is also celebrating diversity through events and tournaments that highlight the contributions of minority players.

The APGA (Advocates Pro Golf Association) Tour, for example, is a professional golf tour that focuses on supporting greater diversity.

Moreover, women’s professional golf is receiving more recognition and support, with increased media coverage and prize money.

The success of female golfers like Nelly Korda, Jin Young Ko, and Inbee Park on the international stage is inspiring a new generation of young girls to aspire to professional careers in golf.

Championing diversity

Programs such as the PGA of America’s Diversity and Inclusion initiative are working to create a golf industry workforce that mirrors America’s demographic makeup.

These efforts are crucial in breaking down barriers and ensuring that golf is a sport where everyone feels welcome.

The rise of stars like Collin Morikawa and Hideki Matsuyama, who have Asian heritage, and the success of golfers like Tony Finau, who is of Tongan and Samoan descent, are helping to change the face of the sport.

Their achievements are not only significant on a competitive level but also in promoting golf as a diverse and inclusive sport. — Forbes
