BRIAN Gondo took advantage of Robson Saurombe’s dreadful show to take the lead on the second day of the Golden Pilsner Harare Open golf tournament at Chapman yesterday.
A Bulawayo Golf Club professional, Gondo, who is having a good season, carded a 68 yesterday to follow up on his 73 on the first day, to take the lead.
Gondo, who came second in the Hwange Open two weeks ago, has vowed to retain the touch that swept him into pole position.
“It was a good day for me. I played well and the score says it all,” said Gondo.
“It is all about hard work. I had a good round after I managed to hit the greens which I missed once during the second day, whereas in the first round I missed the greens three times.
“I did not change my game much.
“Before the game, I did not know how many shots I wanted to be on top of the board, but I had my own targets. The goals I set for myself saw me on top and I am happy.”
He said he was just concentrating on his game.
“I am not aware of who is following me and that will help me; I will be not under pressure. I will stay focused and play my normal game in the final round,” said Gondo.
Another commendable score of the day, 69, came from Kayaam Mandhu who recovered from a nightmarish 79 in the opening round.
South African golfer Sipho Bujela was second after an impressive two-under-par from rounds of 72 and 70.
A six-way-tie followed on third place, with Mohammad Mandhu, Ignatius Mketekete, Nickson Masunga, Steven Ferreira and South Africa’s John Bele on one-under-par.
Peter Banda, Mike Maile and Saurombe, the overnight leader, were tied in eighth place on level par.
The best performing amateur at the event, Pride Sembo, remained in the mix as he returned with a 71 after his first day 74.
The top amateur was at par with professionals Ryan Lang, Nyasha Muyambo and another South African Thanda Mavundla.
Clive Nguru, who recently turned professional, completed the top 15 together with Miros Katembenuka, Julius Kamalizeni, Anywhere Katembenuka and Day Howie.
Bradley Hudson was disqualified.
On the Sunshine Tour, Mark Williams managed to make the cut at the Nedbank Affinity Cup at Lost City.
The Zimbabwean was the only one at the event and pocketed R5 367 and was tied with Peter Moolman and CJ du Toit at one-under-par after the three rounds.
Williams carded 73, 72 and 70 for his first cut of the season.
