A cloud of grief hangs over the city of Bulawayo and the nation at large following the death of renowned gospel musician and spiritual leader, Pastor Barak, born Siphethangani Sibanda.

The founder of Ship of Zion International Ministries, Pastor Barak died on Wednesday at the age of 47, after succumbing to complications related to cancer. His death has left a big void in the local gospel music scene, with artistes, broadcasters, and fans alike mourning a man who was not only a musician, but a beacon of hope and spiritual guidance.

To many, Pastor Barak was more than just a gospel singer, he was a psalmist, a minister, and an inspiration whose music was filled with messages of healing, restoration, and unwavering faith. His concerts were spiritual revivals, drawing believers from all walks of life to worship through music.

Elder Titus Kawadza, representing the Sibanda family, confirmed the heart-breaking news.
“His death is shocking and painful. It has left many of his fans in disbelief. Pastor Barak’s absence is not only felt by his family, but by everyone who found refuge in his music. His voice brought comfort during difficult times,” said Elder Kawadza.

He added that funeral arrangements are being finalised and will be announced soon to allow supporters and members of the church community to pay their last respects.

The gospel fraternity has been hit hard by the news. Pastor Barak was scheduled to perform at this year’s Bulawayo Arts Festival (Baf) Gospel Night last Sunday, but was unable to take part due to illness. Organisers of the festival paid a moving tribute.

“Just days before the festival, we learnt he was unwell but we kept praying and hoping he would recover in time. His absence was felt deeply on the night and now this heart-breaking news. Pastor Barak was more than a performer. He was a vessel of faith and encouragement. His legacy will live on,” read a statement from Baf organisers.

Fellow gospel artiste and close associate, Vusa Mangena, expressed his sorrow.
“I can’t believe this. Pastor Barak played a huge role in uplifting other gospel musicians through the platforms he created. His music will continue to minister to our hearts. May his family be comforted,” said Mangena.

Abednigo Sikhosana, a respected composer and songwriter in the gospel industry, remembered Pastor Barak as a true servant of God.

“He was a gifted psalmist who changed many lives through his compositions. As we mourn, we are reminded of Revelation 21:4 — ‘He will wipe away every tear . . . there shall be no more death, nor sorrow.’ Pastor Barak is now in the eternal presence of our Lord,” said Sikhosana.

Radio personality Benkosi “BKay” Maphosa shared how Pastor Barak’s music became part of his spiritual journey.
“My favourite was Angimboni. Pastor Barak had a gift. His music healed. This is a painful loss to gospel lovers,” said Maphosa.

Another radio personality, Yvonne Tivatye of The Gospel Greats Show, described Pastor Barak as one of a kind. “He dedicated his life to uplifting others through music and the word of God. We are grateful for the blessings he shared with us,” she said.

Pastor Barak was a recipient of an Award at the inaugural Zimbabwe Gospel Music Awards ceremony held on April 11. The organisers expressed deep sorrow, describing him as a cherished member of the gospel community.

“As we mourn, we also celebrate his legacy, the joy, faith, and encouragement he shared with us all. Our thoughts are with his family and supporters,” said the organisers.
Mourners are gathered at 91 Percy Avenue, Hillside, Bulawayo.
