From Mbachi Mutukula-Maregere in BULAWAYO
THE Zimbabwe Bowls Nationals tournament entered day four yesterday with Good Hope bowling club grabbing gold in the Fours at Hillside.
The Good Hope side was represented by bowling veterans Denis Streak, Olly Everson, Brian Ray and Norman Gardener. Gweru took second place, while third place went to hosts Hillside.
In the women’s section Hillside, who last won the Nationals 30 years ago, were victorious in the Fours category.
The first round of the Trips in the men’s category saw Alexandra Sports Club of Bulawayo beating their B team 24-7. Hillside C beat Hillside D 22-8 in 15 ends while Gweru beat Chinhoyi 19-9.
In the women’s section in the Pairs, the Old Miltonians pair of Jane Rigby and Mel James were victorious as they beat the Hillside team 23-9 in an entertaining match.
In their second round matches, the pair turned on a superb show as they beat Francistown Bowling Club of Botswana 28-4.
“We are very happy we got a bronze after finishing third in the Fours,” said Rigby. “We were glad to get it although we had won our section and thought we were going to play the winner of the other section which was Gaborone of Botswana.
“It could have been good to play for gold and silver but it has been a good tournament,” said Rigby.
Rigby is one of the top bowlers in Zimbabwe and she was ranked 10th on the World Singles Rankings two years ago.
The bowlers are expected to battle in the Trips and Pairs matches this morning.
