PROMINENT fitness trainer Godfrey Gordon popularly known as Khumalo who died on Monday evening will be buried at West Park Cemetery tomorrow morning. At the time of his death Khumalo was still conducting training sessions at Ascot Racecourse. Khumalo, who family members said was fit as a fiddle, suddenly started complaining about pain in his legs on Saturday and his condition deteriorated on Monday morning.
His brother Lameck Gordon said Khumalo who died on Monday night in Pumula where he had gone to seek prayers with his friend Philani “Beefy” Ncube who is How Mine’s coach, will be buried tomorrow after a group of Khumalo’s friends offered to cater for burial costs.
“The funeral service is on Saturday morning and we are going to have a church service at First Funeral Services which is at the corner of First Avenue and Fife Street at 9AM. After that we will proceed for burial at West Park Cemetery.
“We are grateful to his friends who have assisted with the burial costs and this shows that our brother was really a man who lived well with the people,” said Gordon.
He declined to reveal which of Khumalo’s friends had assisted and said they will do so once they have communicated with them.
A former army physical instructor, Khumalo (68) rose to fame in the 1980s when he worked with the star-studded Highlanders side which had club legends Madinda Ndlovu, Peter Nkomo, Willard Khumalo, Tito Paketh and the late Mercedes Sibanda.
He continued providing physical training to Bosso through the 90s up to the beginning of the new millennium when Highlanders went on to win four titles on the trot.
Khumalo’s work did not go unnoticed as most Bulawayo clubs including Chicken Inn, How Mine, ex-Premiership side Quelaton and Plumtree Chiefs (Bulawayo Chiefs) were conditioned by him.
Even sports personalities and fitness enthusiasts from Bulawayo also trained under Khumalo.
Mourners are gathered at his 17 Hambly Road home in Thorngrove.
Gordon appealed to well-wishers to assist with resources to bury Khumalo.
Khumalo is survived by 11 children.
