ERIE, PENNYSLVANIA. — Junior attack Rachel Goromonzi of Zimbabwe broke the programme record for goals scored with the 29th of her career as her American university college side Limestone dropped a 3-1 decision at Mercyhurst in an NCAA Division II women’s field hockey game last Friday.
Goromonzi also tied the all-time points record with 64.
Mercyhurst took the early advantage, 1-0, on a goal by Blair Pembleton with just 8:55 gone by before the Saints answered back. With 12:24 on the clock, Goromonzi then found the back of the cage for her record-setting 29th goal to tie the score at 1-1. That goal also tied her for the most points in programme history with 64. Both records have been accomplished in just over two years of action.
The Lakers would return with a goal of their own nine minutes later when Kelsey Lovelace made it 2-1 with 21:01 on the clock in the first half. That would be the margin at half-time and for much of the first part of the second half. It would be Mercyhurst that would strike again as Pembleton took a pass from Lovelace for her second goal of the game, this one coming at 61:20. That would be all they would need as they closed out the two-goal victory.
Goromonzi had the lone goal for the Saints while senior goalkeeper Lindsay Hinton played all 70 minutes, allowing three goals and making four saves.
Pembleton led Mercyhurst with two goals and Lovelace had the only other score. Jess Wess played the entire game in goal, allowing just the one goal while making four saves.
Goromonzi now has 29 career goals and 64 points . . . both the goals and points records were set by Sara Parker (2009-12) over the course of her four-year career.
Before playing in last Friday’s match, Goromonzi had in the previous week tied the programme record by scoring his 28th goal when she helped Limestone to open their fifth season in style as they downed Newberry 7-1 in front of an NCAA Division II field hockey record 665 fans on September 5.
In that match, Goromonzi scored a pair of goals to tie the programme record with 28 before she went on to break the record by scoring again against Mercyhurst last Friday.
Goromonzi is currently majoring in Business Management at Limestone College and she plays for the college’s women’s field hockey side together with five other fellow Zimbabwean players — Stembeni Zhanda, Rufaro Mushavi, Tanya Jansen, Nicolle Grant and Ruva Masaisai. — NCAA.com
