THE Department of Veterinary Services has put Goromonzi District under indefinite quarantine after dip tanks with at least 100 cattle were suspected to be infected with Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).
During the period, livestock will not be allowed to move into or from the affected area.
The quarantine order was issued yesterday in terms of Paragraph (a) of subsection (4) of Section 21 of the Animal Health Act, 1960 (Revised addition 1996).
In a notification to Livestock Development Committees (LDCs), stock owners, traditional leaders (chiefs, headman and village heads the department during the period, no ruminant and pigs could be moved or allowed to stray into or from Goromonzi district.
“To mitigate or stop the spread of the disease the following must report immediately any suspicion of sick animal to DVS, produce all cattle for vaccination and or inspection when called by DVS and sensitise and educate other stock owners,” said the department.
Farmers and members of the public were urged to report early any illegal movements of cattle, sheep, goats and pigs to ZRP and DVS.
FMD is a notifiable disease which was officially monitored, prevented and controlled through a Government programme.
