People in Ward 16 of Goromonzi district have received chickens under the Presidential Poultry Scheme, with the 3 000 households receiving 10 chickens each.
The programme was launched by President Mnangagwa last year, and is aimed at improving rural livelihoods through generating incomes and improving nutrition for the people.
Critically, the programme will see an increase in production of free-range chickens, which have a good market.
Officiating at the event held in Nyakudya Village on Wednesday, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland East Province Aplonia Munzverengwi said more programmes from the President were on the way.
She challenged the beneficiaries to take good care of the chickens, which are meant to empower them.
“We are here in ward 16 and we are giving 30 000 roadrunners today. We want to give everyone these chickens from the President.
“This means 3 000 households will get 10 chickens each today.
“The President does not want to know whose household is being given chickens, but he is saying every household is benefiting from this programme.
“This is not the only programme our President is doing for his people. We have a Presidential Goat Programme, and we have since started distributing them. As a province, we have been given 98 000 goats.
“His aim is that all of us in rural areas should be empowered; no one should be left behind.”
Minister Munzverengwi said the President is also ensuring that everyone gets potable water, hence the procurement of borehole drilling rigs.
One of the rigs is already in the province drilling boreholes for the people.
“So today, the President has given you these chickens, now goats are coming. Also be patient as you wait for the rig to come and drill boreholes for you. Remember each village will get two boreholes each.
“Now I want to implore you to keep these chickens well. Feed them, give them water.”
Amai Mutandwa from Nyakudya village who received 10 chickens thanked President Mnangagwa for keeping his promise
“We are happy today because our President has fulfilled his promise. Today I received 10 chickens as per promise and this will go a long way in my poultry project. I am empowered. These chickens will give us eggs to eat, this is commendable.”
Mrs Kaseke said her chickens were big and easy to keep.
“I only want to say thank you our President for this gesture. This shows that you have your people at heart. Thank you once again.”
Another beneficiary Mr Owen Gore said his chickens will be kept well as a proud beneficiary of the Presidential Poultry Programme.
