GOVERNMENT has lauded efforts by cooperatives in bridging housing challenges as Zimbabwe eyes the attainment of an upper-middle-income economy by 2030.

Speaking at Mupamombe Housing Cooperative in Kadoma this morning, Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Senator Monica Mutsvangwa said housing cooperatives had become key in complementing the Government’s efforts for its citizens to have proper accommodation.

The Mupamombe Housing Cooperative has over 840 housing units benefiting civil servants and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) players, and vendors.

“We are solidly behind housing cooperatives as they are working in bridging accommodation gaps,” she said.

Sen Mutsvangwa, who also commissioned an electricity transformer purchased by the cooperative, commended its organised nature to raise enough money to secure three electricity transformers.

The cooperative is expected to secure another transformer for the housing beneficiaries to access power without challenges.

Zimbabwe National Cooperative Federation (ZNCF) president, Mr Mike Duru, said apart from bridging housing gaps, cooperatives had also been creating employment and providing a source of livelihoods to thousands countrywide.

The ministry, in collaboration with the Zimbabwe National Cooperatives Federation (ZNCF) is celebrating the United Nations International Day of Cooperatives at Mupamombe.

This year’s theme is “Cooperatives: Driving Inclusive and Sustainable Solutions for a Better World”.
