Government committed to resettling youths: Chombo

Youths who did not benefit from the land reform programme have the right to be resettled so that they contribute to Zimbabwe’s development, Zanu-PF lands and resettlement national secretary Cde Ignatius Chombo has said. Speaking at Zanu-PF victory celebrations at Mutswiti Estates (Ward 14) in Zvimba North constituency on Saturday, Dr Chombo said some of the youths were too young to benefit when Government resettled 300 000 families starting in 2000.

“There are youths who were young when Government embarked on the land reform programme.
“Some of them were 12 years old or even 15 years old but they now have families that need to be taken care of.
“We need to meet as leaders, in Government and in the party, and look at how these young parents can benefit from the land reform programmes,” he said.

Dr Chombo urged the youths to identify land for resettlement.
“If you identify land that has not been allocated to anyone, approach your leadership through the district adminstrator’s office so that youths can be resettled on that land,” he said.

Dr Chombo was responding to issues raised by Zvimba Rural District Council ward 14 councillor Cde Clemence Madzingo (ZANU-PF).
Cde Madzingo said farmers in the ward had a bumper harvest and there was need for more land for resettlement.

However, Dr Chombo urged resettled farmers to apply for stands in urban and peri-urban areas to build houses.
“There are stands in urban areas and all farmers who believe they have the capacity to build their houses can apply for the stands.
“If you get your stand and title deeds, these can be used to get loans for building your house,” he said.

All Zimbabweans, Dr Chombo said, could get stands in areas of their choice but they have to develop them in a year.
“We have agreed that all Zimbabweans can apply for stands in urban set-ups but these have to be developed because council has a right at law to repossess undeveloped stands,” he said.

Dr Chombo distributed bicycles to political commissars in the ward so that they could continue mobilising support for the ruling party ahead of the 2018 harmonised elections.
