THE Deputy Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Simelisizwe Sibanda, has expressed concern over low enrolment levels at Nyadire Teachers’ College, warning that declining student numbers could undermine efforts to produce enough qualified teachers for the country’s education sector.
Speaking while officiating at the institution’s 40th graduation ceremony last week, where 151 students graduated, Deputy Minister Sibanda called on communities and stakeholders to work together to boost enrolment at the college.
“I challenge parents, schools, traditional leaders and local authorities across Mashonaland East province to actively support efforts to increase student enrolment,” he said.
The Deputy Minister, who was representing Minister Frederick Shava, said teacher training institutions remain critical in shaping the future of the country’s education system and national development agenda.
He urged prospective students to take advantage of opportunities available at teacher training colleges, noting that the teaching profession remains one of the most important pillars in nation-building.
Deputy Minister Sibanda also raised concern over the gender imbalance among the graduates, with only 19 males among the 151 graduands.
“The low number of male graduates is a matter that requires our collective attention. We need more young men to consider teaching as a viable and rewarding career path. A balanced teaching workforce is important in providing diverse role models for learners,” he said.
He commended the graduates for their perseverance and dedication throughout their studies and urged them to uphold professionalism and integrity as they embark on their teaching careers.
