THE early closure of schools for the first term will not change the rest of the school calendar unless there are other circumstances that might need to realign it.
The Government last week announced that schools and tertiary institutions will close on Tuesday, a week-and-a-half early for schools as a precautionary measure against the coronavirus (Covid-19). Parents and teachers are worried that the early closure of schools might affect the school calendar and pupils especially those who are writing in June and the Grade Seven public examinations.
Deputy Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Cde Edgar Moyo told Sunday News that all the school programmes have not yet changed but Government will assess the situation and make appropriate announcements if need be.
“What only changed is the closing of schools, the other programmes are still on course. The opening date remains unchanged despite that we have closed early. Changes will only emanate depending on the circumstances that will be there when we are opening.”
Cde Moyo said the decision to close schools early was taken in line with the directive to prohibit gatherings of people that exceed 100. — Sijabuliso Nyoni
