Government prioritises welfare of people living with disabilities

Herald Reporter
Government considers the welfare of people living with disabilities a top priority in its policy initiatives, a Cabinet minister has said. Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Cde Nicholas Goche made the remarks on Wednesday at the second disability continental round-table meeting in Harare.
“We consider it Government’s top responsibility to protect all citizens from destitution and distress,” he said.

Apart from the efforts aimed at directly alleviating poverty through stimulating gross national product, it is a key feature of all budgetary allocations that funds are set aside to cater for the needs of disadvantaged persons.”

Cde Goche said Government established a disabled person’s fund to provide vocational training fees, grants, medical fees, assistance with technologies and a revolving loan facility for empowerment projects.

“On top of this, Zimbabwe has set up national rehabilitation institutions to provide vocational training for persons with disabilities,” he said.
