Government sets aside US$5 million for city street lighting

Government has set aside US$5 million to install more than 1 100 street lights in and around Harare’s central business district.
So far, Government has installed 514 street lights under the ongoing programme.
Local company Ship Tracks Private Limited installed 427 street lights while the other 87 were installed by Exodus and Company.

On Thursday, Local Government and Public Works Deputy Minister Benjamin Kabikira who was representing Minister Daniel Garwe commissioned some of the lights.

Minister of Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Harare Metropolitan Province Charles Tawengwa, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume and senior Government officials were also part of the event.
Said Minister Garwe: “This project marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to enhance the safety, security and quality of life for citizens.

“Street lighting is more than just a physical infrastructure; it is a symbol of progress, development, and our commitment to creating a safer and more vibrant community.

“Government, under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Dr ED Mnangagwa, is working towards an upper-middle-income and prosperous society by 2030 and such projects are meant to enhance the quality of life for the residents.”
He said the street lights project will deter crime, reduce the rate of accidents and stimulate economic activity.
“By utilizing energy-efficient lighting solutions, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also setting an example for future projects. We must continue to embrace innovative technologies that promote sustainability while meeting the needs of our community.”

He went on to call upon the Harare Mayor to maintain the momentum on the greening and the beautification of the capital city.
“Let’s cover all parts of the CBD and then cascade the project to residential areas. The infrastructure development in Harare has demonstrated the importance of collaboration between Government tiers. Millions of dollars have been poured into these projects and council must ensure that the infrastructure is maintained,” Minister Garwe said.
