GOVERNMENT has intensified efforts to preserve Zimbabwe’s liberation history through the rehabilitation of key liberation war heritage sites in Mozambique, Zambia and Angola as part of programmes aimed at honouring the country’s fallen heroes.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Zhemu Soda revealed the developments during a Post-Cabinet Media Briefing in Harare on Tuesday.
He said Cabinet had approved a report presented by the Acting Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on State Occasions and National Monuments, Honourable Daniel Garwe, highlighting progress on the rehabilitation of liberation war heritage sites in neighbouring countries.
Dr Soda said the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage has embarked on Phase Two of the rehabilitation programme focusing on four sites in Mozambique namely Tembue, Nyangao, Doroi and Chicualacuala.
In Zambia, Government is completing rehabilitation works at Freedom Camp, Nampundwe, Mkushi, Mlungushi, Kavalamanja and St Mary’s Kabwe.
“The Ministry also envisages starting works on the Boma site in Angola where a cenotaph with a roll of honour will be constructed, alongside a mass grave, ablution facilities and fencing of the site,” said Dr Soda.
