“Lest we forget”: 2026 Heroes Day theme revealed

THE 2026 National Heroes Day commemorations will be held on August 10 under the theme, “Lest We Forget”, with Government continuing efforts to preserve the country’s liberation heritage through the rehabilitation of historic liberation war sites.

Speaking during a Post-Cabinet Media Briefing in Harare on Tuesday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Zhemu Soda said Cabinet had approved programmes for the 2026 National Heroes Day commemorations and Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day celebrations following a presentation by the Acting Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on State Occasions and National Monuments, Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Honourable Daniel Garwe.

Dr Soda said the main Heroes Day commemorations will be held at the National Heroes Acre on August 10.

He said the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage had completed updating the names of all national heroes and heroines.

“The total number of fallen heroes currently stands at 254, with four of them, namely Cde Petros Khumalo, Cde Shumirai Wekwete, Cde Joseph Zethi Dube and Cde Herbert Zaba Sambo having been declared posthumously,” said Dr Soda.
