GOVERNMENT has reaffirmed its commitment to providing food assistance to Tongogara Refugee Camp in Manicaland Province.
In an interview, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Minister Dr Anxious Masuka highlighted the need for support to specific institutions like Tongogara, which houses a significant number of refugees.
In his remarks, Dr Masuka said while overall food security in Zimbabwe was improving, certain areas still required intervention.
“We also looked at social welfare and said that we have had a very good season, so social welfare intervention at this stage might not be of the highest importance. However, we noted that at Tongogara Refugee Camp, we needed to intervene.”
This statement underscores the Government’s recognition of the unique challenges faced by the refugees, who often lack access to essential resources and support systems.
There are approximately 17 200 refugees in the country, with the majority originating from the Democratic Republic of Congo 76 percent.
Other nationalities represented include Mozambicans (11 percent), Burundians (4 percent), Rwandans (3 percent) and various other groups, constitute the remaining 6 percent.
The refugee population is expected to rise to 18 000 by the end of 2025, driven by ongoing instability in various African regions.
