ALL Government departments and ministries vehicles are now required to be registered and licensed with the Zimbabwe National Road Administration, the authority’s chief executive Mr Frank Chitukutuku has said.
In an interview yesterday, Mr Chitukutuku said all Government vehicles which do not display licence discs would not pass through toll gates and check points.
He said this followed a directive by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Infrastructural Development that all Government departments and ministries vehicles must be registered and licensed.
“It is true that the Ministry of Transport (Communications and Infrastructural Development) has instructed all ministries and Government departments to license all their vehicles with Zinara,” he said. “The vehicles should display licence discs like any other ordinary vehicle.”
Mr Chitukutuku said the move was necessitated by reports that some fraudsters were evading paying motor licences claiming to be driving Government vehicles.
“There are many people who are abusing the system and claiming to be driving vehicles belonging to Government when in actual fact they are personal vehicles,” he said.
“To close that loophole we requested through the ministry that all vehicles must be registered and licenced.”
Mr Chitukutuku said the Government would not pay for the licences.
He said service chiefs, ministers and security personnel had already complied with the requirement.
“They have always been complying and their vehicles have always been licensed,” said Mr Chitukutuku. “So, this directive is not leaving anyone as long it is a Government vehicle it must have a proper licence disc issued by Zinara.”
Mr Chitukutuku said nearly half of the estimated 12 000 Government fleet had been licensed.
Zinara is computerising all the tollgates around the country which would allow only licensed vehicles to pass through.
