GOVERNMENT has commended the Scientific and Industrial Research and Development Centre (SIRDC) for its relentless commitment to fostering innovation and research.
This was highlighted at the 6th annual general meeting of SIRDC, where key officials praised its significant role in the nation’s economic growth.
Permanent Secretary in the Office of Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga, Mrs Marcia Nyanda, represented by Mr Kennel Bebe, emphasised the centre’s contribution to development.
“These efforts continue to yield significant results and contribute to the country’s economic growth and development in line with the National Development Strategy 1, as we stride towards the attainment of an upper-middle-income society,” said Mrs Nyanda.
The Government specifically acknowledged SIRDC’s achievements in agriculture, which include the development of new rice varieties and disease-free Irish potatoes.
These initiatives are vital for enhancing food security and boosting agricultural productivity in the country.
In addition to agriculture, Mrs Nyanda highlighted SIRDC’s work in the energy and environmental sectors.
“The promotion and training on the use of alternative energy sources being offered by SIRDC is very commendable,” she said, recognising the importance of sustainable energy practices in combating climate change and promoting environmental stewardship.
SIRDC was encouraged to continue harnessing technology and innovation to address pressing national challenges.
“As we look to the future, I challenge SIRDC to continue liberating technology and innovation to address the pressing challenges facing our nation,” said Mrs Nyanda.
The call to action underscores the vital role that research and development play in tackling issues such as energy shortages and environmental degradation.
SIRDC’s work is expected to be integral in driving the country’s development agenda. By focusing on innovative solutions, SIRDC aims to support various sectors, including healthcare, manufacturing and education, thereby contributing to a more resilient economy.
