THE construction of flats for civil servants is a critical component of the Second Republic’s comprehensive strategy to reduce the national housing deficit through targeted developments across all provinces, Special Advisor to the President on Monitoring Implementation of Government Programmes and Projects Dr Jorum Gumbo has said.
Speaking in Marondera after touring the construction site for 64 civil service flats in Dombotombo yesterday, accompanied by officials from his office and the Ministry of National Housing and Social Amenities, plus officials from Mashonaland East Province, Dr Gumbo said he was impressed by the notable progress being made towards housing delivery programmes across the country.
He applauded Leengate Contractors for the construction works on the civil servants flats, which are now 96 percent complete.
“Standing here, I am profoundly encouraged to witness the near-completion of this 64-unit housing development, a project that began in 2022 and now stands as tangible evidence of our nation’s commitment to addressing housing needs.
“I have observed with great satisfaction the remarkable progress being made in housing delivery nationwide. The collaborative efforts between the Ministry of National Housing and Social Amenities and all our strategic partners including financial institutions, pension funds and private developers have yielded exceptional results in meeting our national housing targets.
“The success of this project find even greater resonance when we consider the ongoing construction of 400 additional units in Dabuka Village in Goromonzi district. This expansion not only demonstrates the scalability of our housing programme, but also stands as testament to the powerful synergy between Government and private sector partners in delivering affordable, quality housing solutions to our citizens,” he said.
Dr Gumbo also said the construction of the flats resonates well with President Mnangagwa’s mantra and vision.
“The vision of our President resonates profoundly in this moment; Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo”. Today, the Dombotombo housing project is a powerful manifestation of that vision. What we see here is not just brick and mortar, but the fruit of unwavering collaboration among dedicated stakeholders.
“This project which will soon provide dignified homes for 64 families aligns seamlessly with the Zimbabwe National Human Settlements Policy, ensuring equitable access to housing, particularly for our hardworking civil servants in Mashonaland East province.”
Chief director in the Ministry of National Housing and Social Amenities Mrs Kudzai Rimai said such projects contribute to the achievement of Vision 2030.
“The Dombotombo project is contributing to Vision 2030 through efforts that we are putting towards the achievement of the National Development Strategy 1 target of a million housing units by 2025.
“So these units are part of Government contribution towards meeting the NDS1 target for housing delivery. The target is going to be realised through the efforts of both Government and the private sector.”
