He was responding to Mvurachena Senator Cephas Makuyana on whether Government will intervene in the squabbles that have rocked the Zimbabwe Congress of
Trade Unions and Zimbabwe Federation of Trade Unions.
“Let workers have their own democracy, even factions are there in political parties. How many MDCs do we have? It might be necessary today, but tomorrow Government will start to determine trade unions leaders and their programmes and that will not be right.
“What we can only do is moral persuasion so that they resolve their problems amicably and concentrate on addressing the plight of workers,” he said.
The ZCTU split into two factions led by Mr Lovemore Matombo and Mr George Nkiwane while the ZFTU once split between a faction led by Cde Joseph Chinotimba and Mr Jacob Gwavava.
DPM Mutambara, however, pledged to lobby for the improvement of MPs’ conditions of service.
Legislators are demanding that they be given diplomatic passports, low density residential stands among various things to improve their conditions of service.
“We are going to take it up with Government that if deputy ministers have diplomatic passports, why can’t we take it up to the judiciary? Why can’t we take it up to Parliament? Even if it’s other benefits or allowances, why can’t we give the same to legislators?
“I have a problem that we in the executive because we control the purse we tend to be disrespectful to Parliament so I will personally take that issue up,” he said.
Parliamentarians have been calling on Government to address their conditions of service and had to wait for three years before their sitting allowances were paid in December last year.
