IN a move that will propel rural development to new heights, Government is allocating US$70 million to the Presidential Rural Development Programme, as part of efforts to improve livelihoods in rural communities.
Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development permanent secretary Professor Obert Jiri said the funding would be strategically directed towards various initiatives such as the establishment of business units, vocational training and the distribution of agricultural resources to ensure the success of the programme.
Prof Jiri revealed this when he was commenting on the 2024/2025 summer season plan recently.
“By allocating these resources, we aim to stimulate economic growth, create job opportunities and promote sustainable practices in farming and entrepreneurship,” he said.
The budget will facilitate the development of infrastructure and support services necessary for the successful implementation of the programme.
“This comprehensive financial backing is expected to have a transformative impact on rural communities, empowering residents to contribute to the overall economy,” said Professor Obert Jiri.
The initiative aims to establish a total of 10 000 village business units (VBUs) by December 2024, with an additional 1 500 units planned for January 2025 to May 2025.
“The addition of a further 1 500 units in the early months of 2025 will further enhance the programme’s reach and impact and this phased approach not only aims to meet immediate economic needs but also ensures that infrastructure and support systems are in place to sustain the businesses over the long term,” said
Additionally, the scheme will facilitate the distribution of vegetable combo packs, sweet potato vines and fruit trees promoting sustainable agriculture and nutrition within rural communities.
Elite virus free sweet potato vines, vegetable combo seed packs and fruit trees will be distributed under the Presidential Rural Development Programme. Fruit trees will be distributed in line with the soil and climate requirements of various agro-ecological regions.
“The initial phase targeting 10 000 VBUs will focus on equipping communities with the necessary resources and support to create sustainable businesses that can thrive independently,” Prof Jiri explained.
The Presidential Rural Development Scheme, an integral part of the Rural Development 8, 0 initiative, aims to enhance rural economies by establishing various business units. It will primarily focus on the creation of industries stemming from agricultural production.
The VBUs, which are the centre point of the rural development initiative will empower local communities by promoting entrepreneurship and self-sustaining businesses that cater for the needs of the villages.
More so, youth business units targeting young farmers will encourage entrepreneurial ventures and skill development, helping to create job opportunities and reduce unemployment in the youth demographic.
As the country journeys towards Vision 2030, these agricultural initiatives aim to promote sustainable farming practices while improving food security within rural communities.
