GOVERNMENT has renewed the suspension of import duty on critical equipment and spares imported by subsidiaries of Zesa Holdings.
The suspension of the duty is contained in Statutory Instrument 157 of 2013 cited as the Customs and Excise (Suspension) (Amendment) Regulation, 2013 amending Statutory Instrument 257 of 2003.
“Subject to this section and to such conditions as the Commissioner General (Zimra) may fix, a suspension of duty shall (for a period of one year with effect from date of publication) be granted on power equipment, critical spares and on transformer components imported by Zesa
Enterprises, Zimbabwe Electricity and Transmission Distribution Company and successor company of Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company and Zimbabwe Power Company,” said Finance and Economic Planning Minister Patrick Chinamasa in the SI gazetted yesterday.
Zimbabwe has been facing acute power shortages due to low generation capacity and obsolete equipment.
Vandalism especially of transformers has also affected power supplies to domestic and industrial users.
Zesa has already embarked on projects to increase generation capacity through expansion of Hwange and Kariba Power Stations.
