Govt gets paint donation

Communications and Infrastructural Development Dr Munesu Munodawafa said the donation brought hope and inspiration to the people. He said this was coming at a time when the people were facing serious economic challenges.

Southern Region (Pvt) Ltd donated 800 litres of white and 900 litres of yellow roadline paint for road markings at the Nyanga and Christmas Pass black spots in Manicaland.
Dr Munodawafa said Southern Region (Pvt) Ltd had indicated that they would donate more paint for the Wafa Wafa blackspot between Makuti and Chirundu.

“These spots, you will recall, have contributed to some of the worst road traffic disasters in the history of our country.
“Over the years we have been reduced to passive witnesses to the continued horrific road traffic accidents on these black spots mainly due to resource constraints,” he said.

Dr Munodawafa said the donation came at a time when the country was in its second year of the decade of action for road safety that required Government to put in place appropriate road infrastructure and signage to reduce road carnage by 50 percent by 2020. “It also comes at a time when most of our international donors have deserted us due to the illegal economic sanctions imposed on the country by the West. I therefore thank you on behalf of the country, the ministry leadership, the people of Zimbabwe and all the road users.” in our country,” said Dr Munodawafa.

He also added that Southern Region Pvt Ltd’s gesture would go a long way in cultivating a long term working partnership between them and Government and the people of Zimbabwe for a worthy cause.
Also speaking at the same occasion, Southern Region (Pvt) Ltd director Mr Musekiwa Khumbula said the donation was part of the firm’s social responsibility programmes.

“We will continue to discharge our social obligations. We will continue to work with the ministry and other stakeholders and contribute towards the creation of a better, safer and more caring Zimbabwe,” he said.
Mr Khumbula urged the motoring public to observe road rules, to drive with caution, to reduce speed and to be sober when driving.

He emphasised the need for safety campaigns not only during holidays but also throughout the year and the need for the erection of speed humps at black spots and to have a permanent police presence on the highways.
