Govt hails Special Olympics team

GOVERMNENT has hailed the Zimbabwe Special Olympics team to the World Games, held in the United States recently, for raising the country’s flag high.

The 15 member team returned from the 14th edition of the Games with 12 medals and the Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Paul Mavhima says they have every reason to be proud.

Speaking at welcome reception for the team at Prince Edward School last week Mavhima said: “We are so proud and happy to congratulate them for courageously bringing back home the 12 medals. Our team did not disappoint and here they are showing true success despite the day to day challenges that they face.”

The Deputy Minister praised the Special Olympics Zimbabwe board for managing to send a strong team to the Games in the face of economic hardships.

“We commend the Special Olympics Zimbabwe board that defied all odds and fought as a team to ensure that Zimbabwe was well and fully represented at this biggest humanitarian event of 2015.

“Together we all admire that despite financial difficulties being faced by many sporting associations, the Special Olympics board stepped up and put together a team to represent our beautiful country,” he said.

One of Team Zimbabwe’s medalists Elizabeth Moyo revealed the team wishes to present its medals to President Mugabe.

“We were able to put Zimbabwe on the world map, flying the flag high. Our wish now is to show our President, VaMugabe our medals,” she said.

Golf was Zimbabwe’s most rewarding event bringing home seven (two gold, two silver and three bronze) of the team’s 12 medals.

Gold came from Mike Mudyanadzo and Munya Musariri, silver medals from Dadirai Jack and Patience Mudarikwa while bronze medals were won by Tsitsi Maponda, Viren Mehta and Ethel Chatambudza.

Other medals came from athletics with Nyasha Karima (gold), and bronze medals from Elizabeth Moyo and Nyasha Derera.

Reagan Robinson took bronze in skills while Kudakwashe Makuyana won the participation ribbon in athletics.
