GOVERNMENT has identified State and municipal land for massive housing development under the Command Housing programme in Mashonaland West.
The project will also see the demolition of a number of Messenger Camps and some Government houses, leading to the construction of high-rise buildings, which can accommodate more people.
In an interview, Mashonaland West Public Works Department director Mr Trymore Mutizwa, said the land had already been identified and people are already registering for the programme.
“We have already identified land in line with a Government directive to find land within proximity of services,” he said.
“Mashonaland West province shall have its centres where houses shall be built under the envisaged Command Housing programme.”
Mr Mutizwa said Messenger Camps across the province provide opportunities for quick wins as most of them are now in a dilapidated state.
The houses at the camps, he said, were too small and not fit for family habitation.
“The houses were for messengers during the colonial era and are in an advanced state of disrepair.
“So, Government is saying we need to demolish the structures and built modern flats and high rise structures,” he said.
