Government has launched investigations into a mysterious condition that has claimed several lives in the Mola area of Nyaminyami District where people die after vomiting blood.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has since dispatched a team of health experts to look into the condition that has hit Ward 3, amid reports that around 50 people could have succumbed to the condition in the last two years.

Mashonaland West provincial medical director Dr Wenceslaus Nyamayaro confirmed receiving reports of the condition.

“I have directed that the district medical director (DMO) and his team should visit the area to carry out investigations into the condition. There is very little information on the condition, with much of what we have being anecdotal submissions. We can only be able to have a clearer picture when our team reports back,” he said.

Nyaminyami DMO Dr Godwin Muza said investigations were underway in Chiweshe, Nabhole and Dhobe villages to ascertain the nature of the condition and likely causes.

The latest death was of a man who died at Chalala Clinic after vomiting blood to add to a growing list of casualties now thought to be around 50. Villagers from Mola now suspect that the condition could be as a result of consuming contaminated water from Siamuyalila River. The impact of the condition has raised the ire of the community who feel it has not been handled with the urgency it deserves.

Nyaminyami Rural District Council chairman Councillor Lovemore Negande confirmed the unexplained deaths, saying there was need for more information.
